Few bikes settle on as hallowed ground as the Colnago C40’s in the Mapei colours.

I knew if there was ever going to be an ultimate Fauxnago, this would be it.

What began as a humble email from BC enquiring about a bike designed around last years Melburn Roobaix kit became an amazing tribute to the super team of the 90s.

The frame came to me as shown below – very ho hum.

Gonz Lab added a dossard hanger and bidon cage mounts and it was whisked away to Sun Graphics for ‘the treatment’.

FYXO supplied artwork and an actual C40 Mapei was used as a template for scale and reference for the airbrushed cubes and scales adorning the top tube.  Sun Graphics executed a finish better than factory, and a Faux-carbon effect was added to the fork, rear triangle and seat pillar.

As per the team issue bikes, a full Dura Ace ensemble was used where possible, with 28h low flange track hubs laced and built to F Y X O  clinchers by Velomine.   Look closer and you’ll find other hat tips to the original, seriously executed, but not taken seriously.

In between the discussion of the project, and final delivery for Melburn Roobaix – the Mapei inspired bidon also came to be.  The icing on this chromoly cake.  It was an absolute pleasure to create this customised machine.
